Programs Offered



The Butler Extended Day Program offers both before and after school care during the school year following the calendar of the Belmont Public Schools. Both programs are open to children in kindergarten through 4th grade. Programs operate only when the Daniel Butler School is open. Program days missed due to school cancellations are made up in June, along with the school days.



BEFORE SCHOOL CARE



The before school program is called Morning Care and is open each day before school from 7:15 to 8:35 a.m. Children may arrive at any time after the program opens. Until 8:00, they have a choice of free play or an arts and crafts project. At 8:00, they may either remain in the program rooms or go to the gym for active play until 8:25. At 8:35, the children are dismissed to the playground, where they line up with their classes or to their indoor waiting places during inclement weather. The program does not serve breakfast, but children are welcome to bring breakfast from home and eat it while they are at the program. Children enrolled in Morning Care may also take part in the Butler School breakfast in the cafeteria. A morning care staff member takes children to the cafeteria for school breakfast at around 8:20.Morning Care Hours: M-F 7:15 - 8:35 a.m.


AFTER SCHOOL CARE



The after school program is called BEDP and meets from school dismissal time until 6:00 each day. The children walk from their classrooms when school is over. They meet according to their grade in one of two groups: kindergarten and first grade second, third and fourth grade. A typical afternoon consists of a snack, provided by free play, an arts and crafts project or other teacher-led activity, organized gym time, outside time, supervised homework (optional for grades 2-4), story and group time (especially kindergarten and first grade, On early release days, BEDP begins before lunch and has either a field trip or a special program on site. BEDP Hours: MTThF 2:50 - 6:00 p.m. regular W 1:40 - 6:00 p.m. early release W 11:40 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.


Optional enrichment activities



BEDP contracts with outside providers to offer optional (separate enrollment) enrichment classes to children in the program. For the 2024-25 school year, BEDP has offered:

Soccer Skills from Champion Soccer School

After School Martial Arts from True Martial Arts Academy

Chess Class from Chess Wizards

Environmental Explorers from the Massachusetts Audubon Society


Coming in 2025-26 BEDP plans to add classes in Lego Robotics, science, math enrichment and coding from CodeEx.
